What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants refer to small titanium posts that can be surgically placed beneath a patient’s gum line to assist with tooth restoration. The posts function as replacement tooth roots and are capable of fusing with the bone tissue to provide sturdy foundational support for a custom-made dental restoration. Dental implants are unique in the sense that they’re the only option capable of replacing teeth from root to crown, not to mention, they also have the potential to last for decades.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process can often be categorized into four key steps:
- Initial Implant Consultation – The first step of the process is meeting with Dr. Waite for a consultation; he’ll examine your smile, review your medical history, assess your jawbone density, and ultimately make the call on whether you can receive implants.
- Dental Implant Surgery – The surgery part of the process is fairly straightforward. After the mouth is numbed, small incisions are made in the gum tissue to access the jaw, and the implants are placed at precise angles; anywhere from one to four or more can be used.
- Osseointegration/Abutments – The implant posts will need several months to heal and fuse with the bone tissue before abutments can be attached to them, which are small connector pieces that the replacement teeth will attach to.
- Delivery of Restoration(s) – Once everything has healed up, you’ll finally be ready to receive your custom-made dental restoration, which will look and feel just like your original teeth.
