One thing that may connect you to your ancestors is the desire for an aesthetic smile. People in the past wanted pearly whites of their own, so it\u2019s hardly a modern problem! However, previous methods may leave you a bit shocked or even grossed out. Keep reading to learn how cosmetic dentistry<\/a> evolved over the years to become safe and reliable in the modern world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ancient Methods to Get Pearly Whites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Going back to 700 B.C., there\u2019s evidence of the Etruscans restoring full smiles. They would make dentures out of ivory and bones, possibly using teeth from deceased humans and animals. They weren\u2019t the only ones replacing missing teeth, as ancient Egyptians would hammer seashells into their gums. Some would even make crowns or bridges with gold!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that, but this group would even whiten their grins with a mixture of vinegar and pumice. As you can imagine, this was quite abrasive and harmful to enamel. The Romans also had their own special way of getting pearly whites, as they would use urine! In fact, it actually worked because, surprisingly, ammonium can effectively remove discoloration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medieval Practices for a Whiter Smile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leaping to the Middle Ages, you might be surprised to learn that a barber and dentist were the same person. Have you ever noticed how their chairs are very similar? Back then, you would be able to get your haircut and dental treatment without going anywhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, their methods for a cosmetic service weren’t the best. To remove any stains, they would file your enamel and coat your tooth with acid. This damaged the enamel, and in some cases, the tooth itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Cosmetic Treatments to the Rescue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the 1700s, these kinds of aesthetic-boosting treatments started to find their footing. For dentures, porcelain started to be used for the teeth, which is strong and reliable. Fast forward to the 1900s, acrylic or plastic was used as the base and started to be molded for every individual patient. A custom fit is still used today with these materials!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even other treatments had their beginnings. In the 1930s, early veneers were temporary and exclusive for movie stars. They lasted just a couple of days, but they started to become a permanent solution around the 1980s. Toward the end of this decade, teeth whitening even got an upgrade! Dentists started using carbamide peroxide as a safer (and less gross!) whitening agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might have a better appreciation for the methods used for cosmetic dental treatments today. They certainly have come a long way! These older practices have since been abandoned, but they are great fun facts to surprise your friends and family with!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
